Actually I do believe detoxing is beneficial but rather in a more prepared and gentle way, which is what I mean by the term “drain”. This can be particularly important when dealing with candida infection.

Drain indicates that the body is able to do the detoxifying successfully with the minimum of side effects or “healing crisis” in naturopathic terms or “die off” reaction in candida terms. If the detoxification or die off is too rapid then common symptoms that occur could be headache, sweating, skin rashes or diarrhoea. If a person is in good health with high vital energy then these sort of symptoms are natural and are a positive sign that the elimination routes of the body are working. For example, if you have a bacteria in your intestines from food poisoning you WANT to have diahorrea to get it out your system, this is your body working perfectly normally. If you are sweating from an illness then your body in its wisdom is recruiting your skin as an eliminatory organ to assist the intestines, liver and kidney’s. However, if you are not in such good health then experiencing these symptoms could be very uncomfortable if they get out of control. Controlling this is what I would like to write about.

What is Drainage?

What I mean by drainage is the ability of the organs of elimination (those that do the detoxification for us) to work efficiently. This means that the toxins that are in us get out of us, this occurs mainly through the urine and faeces. The organs of elimination include the lymphatic system, bowels and intestines, kidneys, liver, gallbladder and skin. in fact every cell must be able to handle its own detoxification but for this discussion I will talk in terms of organs. When all these organs are working correctly good drainage is in place, the body is able to take that internal toxin, be it a bacteria, virus, chemical, hormone, parasite, fungus or candida and successfully get rid of. Where things can go wrong is if someone puts themselves on a detox without proper drainage in place. This means that if a supplement is used to attack the toxin, such as wormwood to kill parasites or Caprylic acid to kill candida but the organs of elimination cannot cope with the end results then you will get the healing crisis or strong die-off reaction.

Wouldn’t it be nice to not have these die off symptoms or at least to minimise them? This is where adequate drainage comes into play and a more structured approach to detoxification can be employed. Drainage can be achieved with specific supplements and remedies and it can also be improved through diet and lifestyle. The natural drainage channels of the body are the organs of elimination mentioned above, ideally all of these need to be in satisfactory working order before any strong detoxification of candida is attempted. So for example if the candidiasis patient, before trying to kill the candida off, takes other remedies to cleanse all the organs of elimination then the candida, once it has been killed can be processed and excreted successfully with reduced “die off” reactions.

Let’s look at an example of what might go wrong if candida detoxing is attempted without proper drainage in place. The patient takes the supplement to kill the candida, but in this case the the liver is below par, congested and not doing its detoxifying job correctly. As the candida is successfully killed off it travels to the liver to be further processed so it can be safely excreted, but as the liver isn’t working properly the candida is blocked at this point. Now the side effects of detoxification are experienced, the die off is too quick for the liver to keep on top of it.

Let’s go a stage further, perhaps the kidneys aren’t functioning correctly due to poor lifestyle choices, now the liver and kidneys are holding the toxins in. How about a step further? The toxins and waste from the bowel can’t get through the liver fast enough and starts to back up into the bowel and lymphatic system. This brings us to a fairly drastic conclusion, is it possible that by trying to kill off candida from the gut, without all the other organs being supported, the candida has unwittingly been moved around the body aggravating the condition, all because the proper drainage channels were not opened before hand? I think this is a very common scenario. Patients who have candida infection have usually done a lot of research and many have tried a lot of candida killing products and done months on the anti-candida diet. Why is it that so many still have the infection? I think one of the reasons is that the body wasn’t prepared properly to eliminate or drain the candida die off correctly.

What to do?

How do you stop this situation happening? The following actually applies to recovery from virtually any illness. You firstly need to get all the organs functioning correctly, restore the cellular communication between them, open the channels of elimination and get them draining properly. This needs to be done before any strong detoxification is attempted. In the example above it means the candida can be killed and then easily moved from bowel to lymph to liver to kidney to successful excretion.

Opening the organs of elimination can be done in a number of ways. Firstly, improve the diet by decreasing detrimental junk foods and by increasing nutrient dense foods. Also eat the correct proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrate suited to your metabolic type. Some types do better closer to a vegetarian diet, others will benefit from protein at each meal. In my clinic I use an online Metabolic Typing questionnaire to accurately predict this. Exclude foods that you know you react to, the most common being wheat, dairy and sugar, but the best way to find out is by using a diet diary. Down one side of a piece of paper write everything you eat and drink and then next to it write how you feel throughout the day. Pay particular attention to how you feel about two hours after a meal. You may even decide to take a food allergy test and exclude the foods highlighted from this. Again, in my clinic I have a method for doing this using an electro- dermal screening instrument called the Avatar.

Also drink enough water, this will of course help all the organs and indeed every cell function more efficiently. To assist the liver decrease your toxic load, stop taking in chemicals from foods by eating organic and stop other chemicals that you may be absorbing such as aluminum from deodorants, fluoride in toothpaste, alcohol and smoking. To assist the lymphatic circulation use dry skin brushing, take alternate hot and cold showers each day or use Epsom salt baths. These suggestions just scratch the surface but each one will address improving your drainage so detoxing is more efficient.

Supplements

For some candida sufferers this approach may not be enough and this is really where supplements come into play. In reality, due to the toxic nature of modern life that can’t be avoided and the decrease in nutrition in our food, virtually all people will require some extra support this way. I personally use remedies that have been specifically designed to assist lymphatic drainage at different levels according to the principles of homotoxicolgy, a branch of homeopathy. I also use supplements directed at bowel cleansing, liver cleansing, kidney cleansing and general support throughout the body. Once these have been used in conjunction with general lifestyle improvements the body will most likely start detoxing of its own accord and it will do it effectively with the elimination channels all open. If the problem is at a deeper level and remedies have to be introduced to address bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemicals, candida or other toxins then again the body can excrete them appropriately. After all who would want to chase candida out the bowel only for it to back-up in the liver?

It is extremely useful to have a method of assessing just how well a patient’s system is working. I personally use an EAV (Electro-acupuncture according to Voll) device called the Avatar. This instrument is able to assess the electrical conductivity of the acupuncture system in such a way that it can demonstrate the health of the organs and guide me to the one that is in a weakened state, potentially preventing the effective elimination of candida. These organs can then be specifically targeted and supported with supplements, remedies and spagyric herb. The Avatar also gives a more accurate way of deciding which supplements and remedies will be most effective for the individual patients. For example, I have seven different remedies that drain the lymphatic system and can test for which one is most suited to the patient at the time they consult me.

Christian Bates has been an osteopath and naturopath for twelve years. The meta-analysis included 21 epdiomeiological studies that encompassed nearly 348,000 adults! The individuals were studied anywhere from 5 to 23 years. Of the total number, 11,006 developed heart disease. That’s an insignificant 3% of almost 348,000 people.

An epidemiological study is a statistical study on human populations which attempts to link human health effects to a specified cause. In this case, researcher looked for associations between reported dietary habits and risk of cardiovascular disease. A meta-analysis combines the results of several studies that address a set of related research hypotheses.

Meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies evaluating the association of saturated fat with cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: A reduction in dietary saturated fat has generally been thought to improve cardiovascular health. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this meta-analysis was to summarize the evidence related to the association of dietary saturated fat with risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and cardiovascular disease (CVD; CHD inclusive of stroke) in prospective epidemiologic studies. DESIGN: Twenty-one studies identified by searching MEDLINE and EMBASE databases and secondary referencing qualified for inclusion in this study. A random-effects model was used to derive composite relative risk estimates for CHD, stroke, and CVD. RESULTS: During 5-23 y of follow-up of 347,747 subjects, 11,006 developed CHD or stroke. Intake of saturated fat was not associated with an increased risk of CHD, stroke, or CVD. The pooled relative risk estimates that compared extreme quantiles of saturated fat intake were 1.07 (95% CI: 0.96, 1.19; P = 0.22) for CHD, 0.81 (95% CI: 0.62, 1.05; P = 0.11) for stroke, and 1.00 (95% CI: 0.89, 1.11; P = 0.95) for CVD. Consideration of age, sex, and study quality did not change the results. CONCLUSIONS: A meta-analysis of prospective epidemiologic studies showed that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD or CVD. More data are needed to elucidate whether CVD risks are likely to be influenced by the specific nutrients used to replace saturated fat.

Resources
CVD+risk+meta-analysis+AJCN+2010-1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta-analysis

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiological_study

Am J Clin Nutr doi: 10.3945/ajcn.2009.27725.

Why we need to supplement

Many people think that they don’t need to supplement because they eat well. I have collected here are researched based facts on the quality of our foods, the quality of our health and the quality of our lifestyles and diet habits. You decide.

If you are eating the same key foods today as those eaten in 1940 you will be consuming between 10% and 70% less essential minerals with each meal.

Approx. 33,000 deaths per year would be avoided if UK dietary recommendations were met (5-a-day)

Over 15,000 of the avoided deaths would be due to increased consumption of fruit and vegetables

An increase of 1.15 servings a day of fruit & vegetables was associated with a 14% decrease in incidence of type II Diabetes

When people adhered to a healthy lifestyle (not smoking, exercising 3.5 hours a week, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight) 93% of diabetes, 81% of heart attacks, 50% of strokes, and 36% of all cancers were prevented.

The NHS spends well over £5 billion annually on cancer treatments, up from £3billion in 2002 (Daily Mail Sept 2010)

Micronutrient deficiency may explain, in good part, why the quarter of the population that eats the fewest fruits and vegetables has about double the cancer rate for most types of cancer when compared to the quarter with the highest intake
80% of American children and adolescents and 68% of adults do not eat five portions a day

Fruit and vegetables increase erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity and resistance of plasma lipoproteins to oxidation more efficiently than do the vitamins and minerals that the same fruit and vegetables are known to contain.

Using 4 years of data from the Expenditure and Food Survey between 2002 and 2006, we estimate that the 5-a-day program has lifted fruit and vegetable consumption by 0.3 portions, on average

For both men and women in England the proportion who consumed 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day increased between 2001 and 2005, rising from 22 per cent to 26 per cent for men and 25 per cent to 30 per cent for women.
In 2005, 17 per cent of both boys and girls aged 5 to 15 consumed at least 5 portions a day, compared with between 10 per cent and 13 per cent in 2001 to 2004

In 2007 the average number of portions of vegetables and fruits consumed a day was 3.6 for men and 3.9 for women.

So in general these statistics show that we do NOT eat our 5-a-day and even if we do the food does not contain the nutrients it used to. Add to this the increased stress and environmental toxins of modern life and the conclusion must be that we should supplement with high quality wholefood supplements like Monavie.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Low blood sugar and reactive hypoglycaemia
Low blood blood sugar, or hypoglycaemia, is the opposite of the better known diabetes where the sugar in the blood remains too high. I would say that low blood sugar is fast becoming one of the most common problems I am seeing in clinic at The Perrymount. The symptoms are so wide ranging, from feeling vaguely unwell, to shaking, dizziness, weakness, anxiety and general fatigue and tiredness. The clue to whether the symptoms are blood sugar related are that they may be related to meals. If you have these symptoms it might be that you notice they present themselves if you have gone too long without food. Many people realize this is the case and so will snack to keep their blood sugar up. However, I think this can be the start of a downward spinal as the snacks are usually sugary like chocolate bars or a stimulant like coffee which gives you the feel good "up". Yes the sugar will get the levels raised in the blood, actually too high, making you feel better but the body has to compensate and bring the sugar down again into reasonable levels. If a dip happens again then you will feel like eating sugar once more and so on goes the yo yo of sugar levels, up and down.

The two most common causes I see for this "reactive hypoglycaemia" is eating the wrong foods at meal times and for your snacks and also it can be caused by stress causing adrenal fatigue. Let's briefly look at the latter first. The adrenal glands produce the hormones for the fight or flight response, basically they produce them when we are under stress. If we are under long term or lots of stress then the adrenals can tire or fatigue and not produce enough of these hormones, producing the main symptom of tiredness. The adrenals can also be responsible for hypoglycaemia as these same hormones keep our blood sugar from going too low, so if the adrenals are fatigued they can't work hard enough to keep the blood sugar up. Basically this is the opposite of insulin, which you have probably heard of.

Probably more fundamental is the consumption of wrong foods, and those that make our blood sugar rise quickly and then fall quickly are the culprits. The worst for this will be sugars in chocolate, cakes, sweets etc but these are more snacky foods but if we are looking at main meals then the foods that are most commonly eaten are unfortunately also causing blood sugar dips. These are the high carbohydrate foods such as bread and pasta. I should also point out that some vegetables can cause these blood sugar fluctuations and they are the tubers or underground, starchy vegetables, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots and parsnips. Fruits are also high sugar foods. If you think you do have blood sugar problems you will really need to be careful of all of these foods and judge just how much you can have of them before getting symptoms of low blood sugar between meals.

This is a brief insight into a very common problem. Fortunately, with diet changes and support to the adrenals I have had fantastic results with patients who have really been suffering. I would like you to takeaway the basics from this article, the foods you should avoid that cause the yo yo-ing of blood sugar and also to identify in yourself whether stress could be playing a significant role in the poor regulation of your blood sugar. Then you can take steps to seek out further professional help.

Christian Bates
Osteopath and Naturopath
- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Body Biotyping - Published Article

Have you ever wondered why one person loses weight on a particular diet but others don’t? Or why you gain weight in a certain area and your friend does in another? Or perhaps why some people crave sweet foods and others savory? These questions illustrate nicely how we are all as individual on the inside, in terms of our metabolism, as we are physically on the outside. And because this is true then it has to be true that one diet does not fit all.

Body Biotyping and Metabolic Typing® are ways to find your individualised nutritional needs, a food plan to suit YOU. They recognise patterns in physical, emotional and psychological characteristics to produce foods plans that are specifically tailored to the individual person. They are based in knowledge of how we have evolved over thousands of years and the fact that much of foods we eat today have only been around for a short time and so we are not well adapted to eat them. In fact wheat has only only been available since the start of agriculture about 10,000 years ago, which is a drop in the ocean compared to how long the human body has been evolving over. This could be a reason why so many people and intolerant to wheat and other grains.

History

Cultures throughout history have observed that different diets are suited to different people, for example Ayurvedic medicine from India observes the different Dosha’s (Vata, Pitta & Kapha) and will have different foods for each type. Chinese medicine similarly will not give one diet to everyone but instead bases its individual diet plans on the Five Element system of health. Our modern day understanding of this approach to food and health is largely down to a dentist called Western Price who travelled the world looking at different cultures and what they ate. What he found in these primitive cultures was amazing considering the poor health of todays “civilised” people. He found that they had virtually no chronic health diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, arthritis and cancer. Also they had virtually no tooth decay whatsoever, despite not even cleaning their teeth. Dr Price found basic trends in what these different cultures ate, yet their diets were vastly different! For example the Swiss ate milk, cheese and rye bread, the Eskimo’s ate fish, blubber, fat and red meat, and Indian cultures were closer to vegetarian, although he didn’t find any pure vegetarian cultures. So how can these people have fantastic health yet not be eating the same foods? How can Eskimo’s have no heart disease but eat a diet full of saturated fat? A diet that is meant to clog the arteries just by looking at it! And if Eskimo’s are healthy on meat and fat how can Indian cultures be healthy as near vegetarian’s?

The answer to these questions lay in the fact that we are all individuals and it is how we respond to the foods we eat rather than what the foods actually are. So one person’s healthy food is another person’s poison.

Body Biotyping observes that there are five basic body types that are determined by a dominant hormone gland in our body, they are the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, gonad or gonad/pituitary types. Let’s look at an example:

Adrenal Body Biotype (Daniel Craig, Catherine Zeta Jones): The adrenals glands, which produce the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, produce a stocky, medium height, muscular, rugby-player type shape in the male. These people will crave meat and salt as these stimulate the adrenal gland hormones and act like a “food drug” to make the person feel better. Within Biotying terms an adrenal type will perform better observing a food-combining diet, where protein and vegetables are eaten together and carbohydrates and vegetables are eaten together but not protein and carbohydrates on the same plate. The adrenal Biotype will gain weight around the abdomen, a pot-belly look.

Pituitary types (Cameron Diaz, Steve Redgrave) are the tallest Biotype and gain weight all over, thyroid types (Johnny Depp, Princess Diana) gain weight centrally on the thighs and buttocks and the gonad types (Dawn French, James Corden) gain weight on the rear and breasts in the women. Pituitary types crave milk and dairy, thyroid types sweets, carbs and coffee and the gonad type rich spicy foods.

These individual differences reveal so much about us and answer questions that so many people are asking about themselves and why they can’t lose weight, feel tired or aren’t of good health . Body Biotyping reveals that only two of the five types would do well on the Atkins diet, just as it explains why only two out of the five types could be a healthy vegetarian. What about that person you know that just eats whatever they want and never gains weight. They are a gonad/pituitary type (Michael J Fox, Kylie Minogue), the newest Biotype to have evolved and therefore are most used to modern day foods.

Metabolic Typing® uses an online questionnaire to find patterns in your individual characteristics, including your Body Biotype. From this a food plan is generated based on how the foods will balance your metabolism to improve health and for weight loss if needed. Rather than being a calorie restrictive weight loss diet it is a long term food plan which optimises the way your body works by getting you to eat the correct foods in the correct proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrates.

Christian Bates has been an osteopath & naturopath for 14 years and uses Metabolic Typing® preferentially over any other food plan because of the amazing results he has had using it. Apart from the whole body needing adequate hydration to function properly the spinal disc (intervertebral disc) specifically need water to stay “plump”. It is well known that we are taller in the morning and we shorten through the day as our spinal discs are gradually squashed by gravity acting on us as we stand throughout the day. The reason we are taller in the morning is that over night the discs have an automatic function of cleverly dragging fluid back into themselves. It is when this space narrows that problems occur like arthritis, as the joints are closer together, or nerve entrapments (sciatica) as the decreased space causes the nerve to be pinched. So by drinking adequate water you will be making it available for your discs to use, keeping maximum distance between the vertebrae.

Exercise

Most people consider exercise to benefit their cardiovascular health, but your joints and spine will love it too. Exercise will help on many levels, improving circulation, shifting inflammation, releasing “feel good” chemicals, but I want to look at two points, and Bootcamp does these amazingly well (I’m a big fan!). Firstly exercise will mobilise you spine, increasing the movement between the vertebrae and improving your flexibility. Most patients need this to balance work life with exercise as most people have sedentary jobs in front of a PC or on the phone, which basically causes stiffening and tightness through the musculo-skeletal system.

Secondly, exercise will strengthen our “core” muscles, or tummy. Think of your abdomen as the front of your back, and it therefore needs to be strong and functioning correctly to support your spine, particularly the low back. Again the Bootcamp team incorporate core strength into their circuit routines.

Posture

This is my number one point as it applies to everyone! You must make sure you have good posture, particularly when doing what you do most often through the day, so if it is standing then stand well, sitting at the PC, sit well, driving all day, sit well in your car.

The spine basically has 3 curves to it and your weight should be evenly distributed through them to give minimal strain on the ligaments and muscles. Compensations occur if the posture changes in one curve, adding strain to that curve and the others, creating opportunity for injuries. Take for example slouching over a PC, your head and neck are thrown forward and to compensate the low back curve flattens and this predisposes to disc injuries. You can experiment and try this yourself. You must basically check your posture from head to low back and make sure they are all in alignment, not just the part of your spine that hurts. You probably need a spinal assessment by an osteopath to fully examine this.

This is a condensed version of a longer e-book download is available at Our modern day thoughts of “catching” a cold stems from Louie Pasteur the creator of antibiotics, it is called the “Germ Theory”. It is generally thought that cold and flu bugs float around, probably from another persons sneeze and then we “catch” it and then get the cold too. There is another story that runs parallel to this that is less known and concerns the “terrain” that the bug invades i.e. How healthy we are in the first place! Bechamp another doctor who actually worked with Pasteur was the main investigator of this theory, there is actually a book called “Bechamp or Pasteur?”

This theory / fact is that if we are healthy, eating well, drinking well, breathing well, exercising etc then our immune system will readily fight off any bug that we “catch” and we won’t get a cold. On his death bed Pasteur is meant to have given weight to this conflicting idea by saying something along the lines of “The germ is nothing; the terrain is everything”. Proving this to be true is the fact that not everyone, even in the same family, will get the cold or flu. Many of you must have noticed that even after sleeping in the same bed with your partner, sometimes only one of you will get a cold.

So from this we can learn that the best defense for all disease prevention, including the flu, is to be healthy in the first place. Having said this we must remain practical and still listen to Pasteur as he was a clever chap; if you aren’t healthy then having someone sneeze in your face isn’t going to help!

Gut health

Around 75% of our immune system is in our gut so you would do very well to look after your bowels. One of the easiest ways to do this is to take a probiotic. In the clinic we stock a product called Flora Syntropy which is actually resistant to antibiotics so it is great if you have already come down with something and are taking antibiotics. The other product I use, especially for pregnant mothers and children is Culturelle which has lots of scientific research backing it. This is available from Nutri-Link on 08704 054 002 and you only need to take one capsule per day. Otherwise there are many other probiotics available. What I particularly like about using probiotics to support the immune system is that you can use them with babies and children too, just to gently help them through times of possible infection. Most herbs and supplements are not really suitable for youngsters, they are either too strong or simply too big for them to take. Saying this, at the clinic we do stock a great range of children’s supplements specifically designed for 2 year olds and up.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has plenty of research behind it showing that sufferers of many diseases have low levels. A vitamin D deficiency is also associated with colds and flu and it has been found to be deficient in up to 80% of some populations that have been tested. I would rate this vitamin as one of the most important to take for all round cold, flu and general health support. The supplement you take should be Vitamin D3. We have an excellent spray available in the clinic and from our website shop, click here to buy.

Vitamin C

Many people go for high dose vitamin C at times of colds and flu and it MAY help you, but it may not. The effectiveness of all vitamins depends on the individual and vitamin C can help some people but not others. You won’t be able to tell if high dose vitamin C will work for you unless you have done a Metabolic Typing® questionnaire. It is also dependent on whether the vitamin C you take is an acid or alkaline form. It can be quite complicated so just be aware that if you are taking high dose vitamin C it might not work. If you feel it is helping then that’s great, you have found the right product. If you don’t feel any benefit then you should stop.

Orange juice

Continuing the vitamin C thread many people knock back the orange juice at times of cold as they think the vitamin C in it helps them. The same as above will hold true and on top of this fruit juices alkalise the body once digested which will not suit everyone and will not strengthen the immune system. Also viral bugs are killed by an acidic environment, which the juice is NOT producing. So again be aware if you feel worse from lots of orange juice, don’t persevere with it; it might not suit you.

Echinacea

Echinacea is very popular in supporting through the flu and I do use it in the clinic. I personally don’t recommend it for a long term immune boost supplement as so many illnesses these days are due to an OVERACTIVE immune system, like rheumatoid arthritis. To achieve health we need to achieve a balance in the body and long term use of immune boosters can disrupt this. However, if taken at the first signs of flu and used regularly for a week or so you could shorten the flu time and make a better recovery.

Olive Leaf Extract

This is a product I personally use and think is great. Again, I don’t use it constantly but only at the first signs of the flu coming on. Olive leaf is anti- viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. The tincture we have is great for soothing a sore throat if taken straight down from the pipette.

We have Spagyric tinctures at the clinic but it will also be available on the High Street. Spagyric is the process by which these remedies are made, it makes them highly effective in smaller doses and retains all the medicinal qualities of the herb which most other processes do not achieve.

Temple Warrior

This is a product that again we stock at the clinic but it won’t be available on the High Street. It is an old Chinese herb preparation that has been used for centuries for colds, flu, hacking coughs, sore throat, tonsillitis etc. It is particularly good when the cold has got to the lungs and produces a cough especially when outside in windy weather.

Xeno Bioforce

If you prefer to take a supplement through the winter to offer some immune support and protection then this is the product I would suggest. It has low dose vitamins, minerals and herbs in it to offer a gentle support to the immune system without overly “boosting” as I mentioned above. As I said, high doses are good when flu has taken hold but not really desirable for long term use as they may push the immune system too much. For example, Xenobioforce has only 200 mg of vitamin C which is a nice dose that works synergistically with the other ingredients; astragalus, beta carotene, coptis root, ginger root, black cherry bark and zinc. This could be taken daily throughout the winter months to offer gentle protection from flu bugs.

Fasting / don’t over eat

You will naturally want to reduce your food intake when ill and naturopathic advice is to do just this. By eating less you are resting the body and allowing it to concentrate on recovery from illness. You can eat lighter foods that are easier to digest like soups and broths. The classic naturopathic broth to aid recovery is called the Potassium Broth and there is a recipe below. Make this up and take throughout the day. You could do this for the days when you feel the most ill.

I’m sure you have heard quoted “Feed a cold and starve a fever” and everyone takes this as meaning that you must eat during a cold to keep your strength up. In actual fact this has been interpreted incorrectly and the quote should read with a comma “Feed a cold, starve a fever” meaning that if you do feed a cold you will end up making it worse, turning it into a fever, and then having to starve that!

Basically don’t over-eat. It is no coincidence that the flu has hit hard after the over-indulgence of Christmas and New Year when our general health is probably at its lowest.

HOME REMEDIES FOR COLDS AND FLU

Use the Potassium broth OR Immune juice, not both. It is well know both in natural and orthodox medicine circles that heat activates our immune system and kills off invading bacteria and viruses. This is why the body goes into a fever; it does it on purpose and it is there to help us. Hippopcrates is quoted as saying “Give me a fever and I can cure anything". So drink this tea, get in bed to keep warm and let the flu sweat out of you!

Onion congestion relief

For stuffy, congested nose. Chop one yellow onion and place in a small bowl. Drizzle about 1 tbs. of honey over the chopped onion. Go to bed and place the bowl as close to your head as safely possible (on night stand or next to your pillow). This will help you breathe freely all night.

Watch out, you will wake in the morning smelling like an onion! This is the best treatment for early onset of a cold or flu, and works even better with ginger heating tea, above. During the night you may wake to find your feet nicely warm and the socks dry. If you do just take them off and go back to sleep. This is really easy to do and well worth a try. Because it increases circulation it is not advised for those with circulatory or heart problems.

Adrenal fatigue

If you are catching recurrent colds and infections and the colds you get last longer than 2 - 3 weeks or you notice that your colds last longer than everyone else’s than you may have adrenal fatigue. Colds and flu will stay with you for longer than they should if you get back to work too soon before a full recovery has taken place. A little extra rest may prevent the flu turning into a 3 week cough / runny nose etc that just lingers on and on.

• Try some of the Naturopathic remedies suggested in this report.

• In general eat less. The best thing you can do is remain healthy and if possible have a “healthy flu” if you can imagine such a thing. By this I mean you get the flu, it lasts a few days, and then you fully recover from it. Think of colds and flu as a natural way of spring cleaning and detoxifying the body; all the gunk that comes out of us when we have the flu is definitely better out than in. If you manage your flu correctly with rest and good nutrition you might even come out the other side feeling better than you went in!

Disclaimer

The advice in this report does not not replace a consultation with a health professional and is intended for informational purposes. Could it be low blood sugar?

Low blood sugar

Yes, the sugar will get the levels raised in the blood, actually too high, making you feel better but the body has to compensate and bring the sugar down again into reasonable levels. If a dip happens again then you will feel like eating sugar once more and so your blood sugar levels yo yo up and down.

The two most common causes I see for this yo-yo-ing of blood sugar is eating the wrong foods at meal times and as snacks and also from stress causing adrenal fatigue.

More fundamental than this is the consumption of wrong foods, and those that make our blood sugar rise quickly and then fall quickly are the culprits. The worst for this will be sugars in snack foods like chocolate, cakes, sweets etc. If we are looking at main meals then the foods that are most problematic are the high carbohydrate foods such as bread and pasta. I should also point out that some vegetables can cause these blood sugar fluctuations and they are the tubers or underground, starchy vegetables, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrot, turnip etc. Fruits are also high sugar foods. If you think you do have blood sugar problems you will really need to be careful of all of these foods and judge just how much you can have of them before getting symptoms of low blood sugar between meals.

In the treatment of this condition it is vital to get the ratio’s of carbohydrate, fat and protein correct at each meal, this differs for each person and I use what I consider to be the most accurate and advanced way of finding this out which is through the use of a Metabolic Typing questionnaire. This is available online here: http://www.theperrymount.com/therapies/therapies/metabolictyping.html. I also use a protocol of supplements, ionic minerals and spagyric herbs with great success. Below is the testimonial of a patient who was suffering with the symptoms described above and did the Metabolic Typing questionairre and used my adrenal fatigue protocol, which is available here: http://www.theperrymount.com/shop/shop.html

“Hi Christian.

How are you? I've been meaning to email you and let you know how I've been getting on. I've felt absolutely amazing since being on the metabolic typing eating program. I can't believe how much energy I have. I just feel like a different person. I've been eating a cooked breakfast every morning and I've still managed to lose 3lbs in the last 3 weeks, how strange is that! I don't feel bloated or sluggish and my energy levels have really improved. There have been a couple of times that I've broken the rules and had alcohol or pizza or something like that but even then I've got straight back to the program afterwards and have felt completely fine. So, so far things are going really well!”

This is a brief insight into a very common problem. Fortunately, with diet changes and support to the adrenals I have had fantastic results with patients who have really been suffering. On one particular night I decided to have a very early night to catch up and went tombed before 9. I slept through and woke at 6 amazingly refreshed, wide awake and ready for the day. It was then that I realised how powerful and rejuvenating sleep would be to my patients who's health is under par. Imagine having a week of going to bed at 9pm, and implementing all the other advice too, the improvements would be fantastic.

If you are a regular reader of this column you will know that I always look at each patient as an individual and again insomnia is no different. What works for one may not work for another and may even make them worse. In particular, when individualising a treatment plan it is foods and vitamins and minerals that differ in how they help. For example, some people may be aided by carbohydrates before bed, others protein. On the minerals side calcium, magnesium or potassium can help, but it will also vary person to person. To find out your individual requirements of foods and supplements take the Metabolic Typing questionnaire, click here.

However, there are enough basic tips that everyone try that can achieve good results. Firstly avoid all caffeine products, the main culprits being coffee, tea, colas and chocolate. Also tobacco, alcohol and sugar can be nervous system stimulants so avoid these too close to bed time. Reserve the bedroom primarily for sleep, so no watching tv, playing video games, working on a laptop, doing paperwork or even exercising which will be priming the mind for activity not rest.

Regular exercise during the day however has been researched to improve sleep patterns. It has to be regular though, not the occasional piece here and there. Another useful tip is to not spend too long trying to get to sleep. Spend no longer than 30 minutes trying and then get up and leave the bedroom if you haven't successfully fallen asleep. Do something productive for a while and then return to bed to try and sleep again. This helps habituated the mind to sleeping in the bedroom only. Sleep tight.

Calcium Supplements increase risk of heart attack

The Daily Express yesterday had the front page headline "Health Pills Heart Attack Danger". It was reporting on research that showed taking calcium supplements increases the chance of having a heart attack. If you are a Certified Metabolic Typing Advisor like myself then these results will not be wholly surprising. Each different "Metabolic Type", which can be determined through an online questionnaire here, has different needs for foods and nutrients. So, although we all need all the same vitamins and minerals each type reacts differently to higher levels of each nutrient. This is what this research has looked at, higher doses of calcium on top of the normal diet calcium. What the research obviously doesn't look at is what Metabolic Type each of the participants are. Could it be that the people with increased heart attacks are the Metabolic Types that don't react well to increased calcium levels? There is no way to know.

Let me give an example of a Metabolic Typing. If we look at some one who is a "Fast Oxidiser", just one of the types. This means they convert their fuel / food into energy very quickly. These types need higher intakes of protein, i.e. meat and fat i.e. butter than carbohydrates. Protein and fats convert to energy slower so a Fast Oxidiser does better on these foods as it balances their metabolism. A fast oxidiser eating a high carbohydrate cereal breakfast is like adding dry kindling wood to an already raging fire, it will burn too quickly, and the person will be hungry again very soon after breakfast. On the other hand if they eat a cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs the fuel is like damp logs on the raging fire, it will lessen the rate of the fire, and consequently this breakfast will last the person until lunch without hunger.

This scenario is the same for vitamins and minerals. If a Fast Oxidiser takes high doses of a mineral that makes them an even faster oxidiser then they will be further pushing their metabolism in the wrong direction. The vitamins and minerals that work for them are the ones that slow their oxidation rate, balancing them.

The research above does mention that they only looked at people taking calcium supplements in isolation, this means they weren't taking other nutrients that aid its absorption, such as Vitamin D. Also we don't know the quality of the supplements they were actually taking and wether they were absorbed easily.

The research also doesn't take into account the diets of the people studied. For example if some of these people were on a high intake of high calcium foods, such as milk and cheese, already then the calcium supplements would significantly be pushing above what is required for optimum health.

If you are interested in further health tips that could benefit you, your family and friends then sign up to The Perrymount Clinc's One Minute Health Tips here.

Have you ever wondered why one person looks well as a vegetarian and another doesn't? Or why your friend lost weight on a particular diet and you gained weight? Or why a celebrity looks fantastic on raw food and you felt hungry, tired and ill! These questions relate to our metabolic individuality, basically we are all different and have different requirements for food. It explains that he is eating two tuna steaks per day and doing 1000 push-ups. Not really much detail but but it definitely reveals enough to tell me it will be successful. In general terms two tuna steaks per day offers substantial protein and animal fat intake which is just great for weight loss, let's also assume because of this higher protein intake the carbohydrate in Tom's diet will naturally be less, again perfect for weight loss. Most research now shows it is carbohydrates that are to blame for weight gain and also high fat counts in the blood, as the body converts excess carbohydrates and sugars into triglycerides. And in fact protein and animal fat in the diet are less related to weight gain and even high cholesterol than is conventionally thought.

However, it is the individual and how they respond to the food rather than the food itself. So some peoples health and metabolism will thrive on higher proteins and animal fats whilst others will prefer higher carbohydrates and lower protein and fats. This is most obvious in the Eskimo's who eat near 100% animal flesh and are in good health. This individualised approach to health and nutrition is the domain of Metabolic Typing and Body Biotyping, both approaches having ways to find out what "type" you are and therefore which foods and food groups your metabolism will prefer. This Biotype doesn't really gain excessive weight so Tom wouldn't have much to lose and will find it very easy to shed the few pounds he wants to. In general GP types get away with eating a lot of foods that the other Biotypes don't, they are the ones that eat the naughty foods and don't really put on weight, the ones we are envious of "who get away with anything". However, this doesn't mean that their health won't suffer if they do continuously eat poor food choices and because of their single minded addictive personalities they can over do a particular eating style and suffer health issues because of it. In particular foods they would do well to moderate are dairy and spicy foods. Looking forward to MI4!

If you are interested in this approach to health there is more information at www.theperrymount.com

Raw food diet - A good example set by the celebs?

Raw food diets are currently being used with good results by many celebrities, particularly for weight loss. However, will the results be long lasting in holding their weight down or for maintaining long term good health? Christian Bates Osteopath and Naturopath says that certainly for some this diet will be beneficial but for others in will not maintain their long term health. One of the core aspects of the raw food diet is no dairy and red meat and it also emphasis lean meats and protein from nuts, seeds and pulses. Unfortunately I have just seen too many unhealthy vegetarians to know that this diet is good for everyone in the long term . As it says, raw food certainly is beneficial as the enzymes in it are still active and I am a proponent of eating raw food but some people will just have to have red meat in their diet for their cell metabolism to function correctly. So how do you know if you should be eating red meat, lean meat, fish or raw food? Christian uses two techniques to assess the “individual” food requirements of his patients. Firstly he observes the Body Biotype of the patient, this is done by paying attention to their body shape but also by questioning them on their emotional characteristics and also by their diet habits, such as the type of foods they crave and where they gain weight when they over indulge. This separates us into 5 distinct Body Types that all have subtle differences in the way they eat, for example high protein eaters (who would do well on the Atkins diet), low protein eaters (who wouldn’t do well on the Atkins diet), down to those that could be vegetarian and remain healthy long term.

Christian also uses an online questionnaire called Metabolic Typing® developed over 30 years which gives fantastic results. This again finds the individual patterns amongst us all to find out which foods will fuel our cells correctly and provides a comprehensive list of foods that are to be eaten or avoided. To look at a concrete example of this we can look at the research of Dr Western A Price, a dentist who travelled the world looking at indigenous cultures who were privileged to have almost perfect health, devoid of any of the modern diseases we suffer from, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease or obesity. He found that each culture ate the foods local to them so they varied greatly depending on where they were. So for example the Eskimo’s ate literally just animal flesh and animal fat (which is saturated fat) and yet had fantastic health! The Aborigines ate a diet much more dominated by vegetation, although they did eat meat whenever it was available. They too had amazing, vibrant health. The Swiss had a diet dominated by raw milk and raw cheese and bread. So would you consider saying to an Eskimo “No you mustn't eat saturated fat it will raise your cholesterol and give you heart disease, you must be vegetarian!”, he would probably turn around to you and say “What’s heart disease?” or maybe “Oh yes I heard about an Eskimo that preferred eating vegetables, he didn’t last very long”. And neither would you say to an Aborigine, “you must eat much more saturated fat, just look at the Eskimo’s they hardly have any heart disease”. The point Christian is making here with these extreme examples is that we are all different and to some varied degree will do better on different food combinations. He also agrees that if someone has a really appalling diet, like most modern diets, full of carbs from cereals and pasta, then some broad sweeping dietary changes will improve health, like cut down on carbs, or reduce you milk intake. But these won’t be long lasting if the advice is off base according to the person Body Biotype or Metabolic Type.

When I have patients in that are obviously quite toxic from poor lifestyle and eating then I will often start them on a short cleanse that would consist of raw foods, however in the long term I will always cater the food plan for them on an individual basis, I do not just give out the same healthy eating plan to al patients as I believe that there is not one diet that is good for every one.

If we are getting really picky then those with digestive disorders will also not do well on raw food as they will not be able to digest it as easily as cooked foods. An easy example would be that of a raw carrot compared to a lightly steamed carrot that will also hold most of its beneficial nutrients even after the steaming but be digested in the stomach much easier.

For more information on anything mentioned in this blog please email christian@theperrymount.com

How do you know if your foods are working for you?

Try this to see if your foods are working for you: 1 -2 hours after you have eaten analyse 3 things; 1) your appetite, you should be satisfied, not overly full or hungry again and cravings sweet foods. 2) Your emotions and mental clarity, you should feel good! not low or depressed and not anxious or jittery 3) Your energy should be improved and long lasting but you shouldn’t be hyper or nervous nor sluggish or lethargic. They recognise patterns in physical, emotional, physiological and psychological characteristics to produce foods plans that are specifically tailored to the individual. These are based on what I call Evolution Nutrition, by this I mean we should observe nutritional habits that our bodies have literally been designed to over millions of years. A great question to ask yourselves with anything to do with health is, what have our bodies been doing for the longest time? Because it is that which we will be most adapted to. Let’s look at a few examples.

What fats are better for you, vegetable seed oils or saturated fats found in animal meats? Well, go back a few thousands years, and think about how you would make an oil out of vegetables seeds? Basically you couldn’t really, you just wouldn’t have the tools to squeeze an oil out of them in the quantities we use today. Now what about animal / meat products? Of course we would have been eating meat, and in fact have been eating meat for millions of years, a Paleolithic diet, so we are far more adapted to eating and processing the saturated fats in meat then any other oil.

My next example is similar, are we more adapted to eating meats or grains such as wheat? The answer is virtually the same, grains have only been produced in agricultural quantities in the last 10,000 years, a drop in the ocean compared to how long we have been eating meats. This is a possible answer to why so many people are wheat intolerant, our digestive systems just aren’t as well adapted to them.

These are examples of general patterns in our nutrition over our evolution. We can get more detailed than this and look at our genetics and family background. This is easiest explained by looking at extremes, let’s take for example the Eskimos’s. Their diet consists of nearly 100% animal meat and extremely high animal saturated fat. Most people know that the Eskimo’s have incredibly low rates of heart disease, yet it has been ingrained into us that these are the exact foods that should be clogging our arteries if we merely look at it!

An extreme in the other direction are certain African tribes where they are very nearly vegetarian and have the same fantastic health as many other indigenous cultures around the world (this is based upon research by a dentist called Weston Price). So would you make an Eskimo vegetarian or an African tribesman consume large amounts of meat? No of course not, it is all about the individual and how their own body responds to the food they eat. Everyone is an individual, we all look different on the outside and our metabolism is as different on the inside to. We each will respond better to different foods, different mixes of protein, carbohydrates and fats and will even do better with different sized meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some of us will thrive on 3 meals per day, other better with 6 smaller meals.

How do you think your diet is performing for you? The simple way to find this out is how do you feel? If you are not as healthy as you want to be then you are probably doing something wrong. A very simple piece of advice I give to my patients is to try something different. So if you are tired, have re-current colds, infections and other illnesses and you eat vegetarian then I would say try not being vegetarian! If you are overweight and lethargic and eat meat at every meal then try cutting your meat intake down and go closer to being a vegetarian, simply experiment with your foods, trying something new. The other piece of simple advice is to stop eating anything that is man-made and refined (sugar, hydrogenated fats etc), if it wasn’t around 10,000 years ago then don’t eat it!

Body Biotyping observes that there are five basic body types that are determined by a dominant hormone gland in our body, they are the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, gonad or gonad/pituitary types. Let’s look at an example of a Body Biotype. The adrenals glands, which produce the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, produce a stocky, medium height, muscular, rugby-player type shape in the male. These people will crave meat and salt as they stimulate the adrenal gland hormones and act like a “food drug” to make the person feel better. So an adrenal type person should be careful to not over indulge in these foods but instead balance themselves with other beneficial foods. Within Biotying terms an adrenal type will perform better observing a food-combining diet, where protein and vegetables are eaten together and carbohydrates and vegetables are eaten together but not protein and carbohydrates on the same plate. Other give aways that an adrenal Biotype will gain weight around the abdomen as the fat cells in this area are sensitive to the cortisol and adrenalin hormones.

Pituitary types are tall and gain weight all over, thyroid types gain weight centrally on the thighs and buttocks and the gonad types gain weight on the rear and breasts in the women. Pituitary types crave milk and dairy, thyroid sweets, carbs and coffee and the gonad type rich spicy foods.

These individual differences reveal so much about us and answer questions that so many people are asking themselves, like why did my friend lose weight on the Atkins diet but I felt awful? Body Biotyping reveals that only two of the five types would do well on the Atkins, just as it explains why only three out of the five types could be a healthy vegetarian. What about that person you know that just eats whatever they want and never gains weight! They are a gonad/pituitary type, the newest Biotype to have evolved and therefore are most used to modern day foods.

If you are interested in finding out more about Body Biotyping and your individual nutritional needs then visit www.theperrymount.com/events to see a full presentation by Christian Bates on Body Biotyping.
